Professional assessment of competence (PAC)

If you’re operating at a senior level in HR and people development and have got five years managerial level experience, the best way for you to become a member is through professional assessment of competence (PAC).

What is PAC?

PAC will recognise your existing experience, skills and competencies and fit alongside your busy work schedule. PAC provides you with a seamless route to becoming a Chartered Member of the CIPD (Chartered MCIPD).

Am I eligible for PAC?

  • Do you have five years recent managerial level experience, three years of which are in a specific HR role?
  • Can you provide work based evidence and documentation to support your experience?

If you can answer yes to the above questions, then PAC may be for you.

What is required?

PAC fits in with a busy work schedule and assesses your experience, skills and competencies over the four fields of our professional standards:

You’ll need to provide your evidence through a combination of assessment methods. This should include one to one interviews with an assigned adviser from your centre, work-based evidence, a 7,000 word Management Research Report on a subject of your choice, and evidence of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

What you need to do

Register with an approved PAC centre where an adviser will help you prepare evidence to demonstrate how your experience and expertise match our practitioner-level Professional Standards.

Use our centre search to find PAC centres. You'll need to:

  • select all practitioner programmes in section 1
  • select professional assessment in section 2
  • enter your postcode
  • click search.

Please note that you are usually required to have at least two face-to-face meetings with a representative of your PAC centre. If you are based outside of the UK you will need to discuss the details of these meetings with your chosen centre.

If PAC isn’t right for you, you could become a member by taking a competence based NVQ or CIPD postgraduate qualification:
