Winner's feedback

What has winning the award meant to you and the organisation ?

It’s a fantastic accolade for what has been achieved by Network Rail. To be recognised by the CIPD for the Advanced Apprenticeship Programme is a significant achievement, especially as we are being judged by our peers, who really understand what the issues and challenges are, and what are the real benefits of what we have achieved.

For the team that have developed the scheme, and for the Apprentices themselves it is a real boost. The team really feel recognised, and the Apprentices value to award as re-enforcement of the value that they place on the quality of education and training they are receiving.

All round it has been viewed as an exceptional achievement.

Why did you enter the People Management awards and how did you find the process?

We entered the People Management Awards to raise the profile of what Network Rail has achieved, and to raise the profile of engineering apprenticeships generally, as this is of vital strategic importance to the future of the UK economy.

The process was straight forward, but it did take time and thought, and planning. The difficulty was in distilling the whole project into a 1000 word, and still being able to tell the story, what to leave out, now that was the question, it would have been easier to write 5000 words.

What do you think other professionals will learn from your entry?

They will be able to learn from our innovative approach to delivery, and the options we chose for the partnership with both the Royal Navy and Flagship Training ltd. When we went into this scheme we thought outside the box, and looked specifically for a delivery option that was the best fit with our needs, rather than trying to get a best fit with existing available supplier. The project benefited from top level support from day 1, and that support never wavered. We had a massive task against impossibly tight timescales, however with absolute determination and teamwork we achieved what we set out to do.

Do you have any tips for anyone thinking of entering the 2008 award, and how to\prepare the entry ?

Spare a thought for the judges, they have a very difficult job reading through all the entries submitted, so your entry needs to be very readable. Avoid dreary detail and concentrate on telling the story of what you have achieved, why you did it, and what were the benefits at all levels, strategic business goals and how it affects people. Concentrate on what the problem / opportunity is and how it was solved.
