Code of Professional Conduct review

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on our Code of Professional Conduct

Code of Professional Conduct review

Membership of the CIPD is the recognised benchmark of professionalism in HR. We set high standards of entry and require a firm commitment to continuous professional development. We also require members to adhere up to a rigorous Code of Professional Conduct to ensure we can maintain standards and safeguard the reputation of the profession.

Following reviews of professional standards and entry requirements, we've now completed a review and update of our Code of Professional Conduct. Led by steering groups, the review has incorporated focus group feedback as well as responses from our consultation over the summer. You can read the revised Code of Professional Conduct here.

What we have done

Jackie Orme announced a review of the Code of Professional Conduct in her speech to the Manchester conference in November 2010.

Steering Group, chaired by a member of the CIPD's professional conduct committee led the review. In March, feedback was gathered in workshops made up of experienced and more recently qualified HR professionals.

We published a draft for consultation on 11 May 2011 and gathered feedback over the summer. This revised Code of Professional Conduct has now been approved by the CIPD Board.  We will be posting more information shortly.

Applications for our volunteer Investigation and Disciplinary pools now being sought.

Our new Code will be supported by new Complaints and Disciplinary Procedures, which take into account best practice in regulation and other professional bodies.

We will be involving members, and other suitably qualified non-members in the management of complaints and disciplinary hearings, through maintaining volunteer groups of trained individuals.

Applications are now open, closing date 4 May 2012.

Find out more and access application form.

The current Code

The CIPD already has a Code of Professional Conduct

All CIPD members are subject to this existing Code of Conduct. It will remain in force until the revised Code of Conduct comes into force on 1 July. Anyone wishing to bring a complaint against a CIPD member should refer to this existing Code and the current FAQs.
