Library lending policy

Borrowing Books

As a member of the CIPD, you are invited to borrow up to five books at any one time for a period of up to 28 days. There is no charge for this service to CIPD members. If you wish to have books posted to you, a charge of £4.50 per item borrowed will be made to cover postage and handling. Members pay their return postal charge. We are not able to send books to members based outside the United Kingdom and Ireland.

You may renew book loans for up to two further periods of 28 days provided the books have not been reserved by another CIPD member. No charge will be made for this service.

You may reserve books on loan to other CIPD members provided the combined number of borrowed and reserved books does not exceed a total of five at any one time.

To renew books, you need to contact us by the final date of your loan period. Please have your CIPD membership number ready when you telephone or quote it in your email.

Returning Books

To ensure that all members can benefit fully from our lending service, books need to be returned promptly. To allow time for you to post the books to us, or to return them in person, we expect them to arrive within seven days of the loan expiry date.

If you return books to us in person, please note that all visitors to the CIPD must first register with the CIPD main reception before being shown through to the Library. It is important that books are returned to the Library directly and not left with reception staff. Opening hours are 09:00 to 17:30 Monday to Friday.

If you post the books to us we advise you to re-use the Jiffy envelope and use the peel-off CIPD return address label on your receipt. As you are responsible for the safe return of the books we strongly advise you to obtain proof of posting or send them by Recorded Delivery.

Please do not lend CIPD books to anyone, as you are responsible for their safe keeping and return.

Overdue Books

Overdue charges become payable eight days after the loan period has expired. Charges are invoiced in accordance with the following scale:

  • Books arriving at CIPD 8-14 days after loan expiry date: £5.00 overdue fee
  • Books arriving at CIPD 15-21days after loan expiry date: £10.00 overdue fee

If you do not return books within 21 days of the loan expiry date, use of the Library and Information Services will be suspended. You will also be invoiced for the full replacement cost of the books borrowed.

The suspension will be lifted only when the overdue charges are paid in full and either the books are returned or the replacement charges are paid.

Please note that whilst we encourage members to make use of the CIPD Library, our policy is to refer to our credit control department any outstanding amounts, including the full replacement costs of books issued to members.

Payment

You can pay by telephone by calling +44 (0)20 8612 6210 quoting your credit or debit card details and your membership number.

You can pay by cheque payable to Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development quoting your membership number on the reverse of the cheque. Send your cheque to the Library and Information Services, CIPD, 151 The Broadway, London SW19 1JQ.
