How does navigation work in the new site?
There are two new navigation bars.
The main horizontal dark grey bar shows you the key areas of the site, eg ‘CIPD and the HR Profession’.
• By placing your mouse on a heading in the main navigation bar, you’ll see a pop-up box which lists the main sections of the area. You can then click on the item you need.
• By clicking (instead of hovering) on a main heading, you’ll go through to the overview page for that area.
The second navigation bar appears when you are in a specific area of the website and lists the options in that web area. For example in HR Resources, you’ll see options for the main Resource types.

How can I use the search in the new website?
There is a search box which appears at the top right had side of every page on the website. The search will find pages which are relevant to all the words you type in.
You can type in single words or multiple words. If you add speech marks around your search words, the search will look for your words as a phrase. For example “compromise agreement”.
The search results will show you the most relevant items first. By clicking on Date (above the purple results bar) you can change the list to see the most recent results first.
The right hand column allows you to narrow your search by a series of filters.

Where are the subject pages on the new website?
HR Topics pages replace the Subject pages on the old website. On the new Topics pages, you’ll find it easier to see the types of full-text resources available on the website – factsheets, research and survey reports, guides, practical tools, employment law FAQs and timetables, etc.
If you click HR Topics in the main navigation bar, you’ll see a list of all the Topic pages within the various Topic Groups.
If you are not sure which Topics page to look at, we have an A-Z index to HR Topics which will take you to the appropriate Topics page.

Where are the Information Resources pages on the new website?
The HR resources area replaces the Information Resources area on the old website.
The HR resources A-Z pages replace the A-Z of Information Resources page.
Resource pages by type of document eg Factsheets, Guides , Practical Tools etc are given greater prominence on the new website – being listed on the green navigation bar when you are in the HR Resources section. (show illustration?) On the old site, resources on these pages were listed in just one way – either by date or alphabetically, depending on the resource. On the new site, users can choose between most popular (this is the default), a-z or by date, and they can filter each list by Topic Group and, to get more specific, by Topic.

Is the Employment Law at Work site any different?
The Employment Law at Work site, for CIPD members only, now sits in the HR Resources area. All the elements of the site are still there, though some have been renamed, for example Recent developments tables are now called Legal Timetables, and Key cases are called Case Reports.
FAQs, Case reports and individual items in the Legal timetables are now searchable (along with other content in Employment Law at Work area) in the m ain website search – there is no longer a separate search feature within Employment Law at Work.

Why is some of the free content only available if I sign in or register?
The CIPD website receives a huge number of visitors every year many of whom visit to access the free information that is available. However a challenge associated with our previous approach was that we were unable to understand the ‘types’ of people accessing this information, and indeed how many are/were repeat visitors.
To help us improve the relevance of the free information that we provide we need to be able to analyse the types of people using it – as well as the ratio of members to non-members- which means that we need to collect some basic details. This is common practice on the vast majority of sites that provide free information
We’re sorry that some users of the site find this an inconvenience. But we’d point out that you only need to register once and the process is quick and easy.
Content marked with an ‘M’ symbol is for CIPD members only. You can find out how to become a member here.
