Rain and new shoes

It’s B’s birthday, and his company has the rather nice policy of giving the day off if it falls on a workday. It seems to give the recipients a disproportionate sense of pleasure relative to the size of the gesture!  So, feeling like we were playing hooky, we’d planned an outing to the seaside.  Unfortunately, the rain was so heavy the streets were like rivers, and you couldn’t see where the sea ended and the sky began.  Took refuge in the splendour, and maintenance nightmare, that is Brighton Pavilion – and ended up exchanging emails with a similarly sodden Group HRD on a wet half-term break, re – yes, you’ve guessed it, the new website.  And he’s been a star, and whistled up an article for us – perhaps it was an excuse to stay somewhere dry.  I’m sure I used to have a time when I did other work though.

when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping.

A colleague and I at a previous company had a phrase coined after one particularly memorable Exec Team meeting – ‘when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping’.  So I conveniently found myself inside a shoe-shop.  Result!

It did set me to wondering why it was that despite the filthy weather, and the curtailed expedition, it had really been such fun.  As someone who can be a bit ‘glass half empty’ at times, it was a salutary reminder of the power of ‘choosing your attitude’.  If only more people did it when applied to their leadership too!
