Hurrah Metrics are Respectable! - Angela Baron

Not so long ago when I was doing presentations on human capital I could almost smell the fear when I mentioned the dreaded words metrics or measures.  So how cheered I am to have just left a session at the national conference on metrics where over a hundred people were enthusiastically discussing what they could develop some real HR metrics and how they could use those metrice to demonstrate the contribution of people.

I am even more cheered because it appears that there is an increasing appetite from external stakeholders – not least those making the all important investment decisions – for more and more information about people.  They are realising that people being often the most important resource have a huge contribution to make and can make or break an organisations with the efforts in terms of innovating new products, delivering world class service and just understanding what the business is about and making it happen.

Just as well as my to do list this autumn includes looking at how we might further develop frameworks for human capital reporting based on better evaluation and assessment of people management interventions and their outcomes.  Suddenly I feel much more optimistic!
