Annual Conference's blog

Is it appropriate to ‘shhh’ colleagues? By the CIPD Conference Insider

Here in the conferences corner of CIPD towers it’s all been getting a little bit excitable recently.

The Annual Conference programme is out, your bookings are rolling in and we’ve started speaking to all our fantastic speakers to make sure they’re getting prepared.  We like to speak to everyone to iron out all the creases in advance so the conference runs as smoothly as possible and we’re prepared for (almost) every eventuality.

But these chats with the speakers give us an intriguing glimpse into what’s going to be covered in the seminars – things like Sir Terry Leahy sharing his people strategy from his time at Tesco; the org design lessons behind the Olympics; what the HRD at M&S does to drive engagement - and so we often get off the phone or back from a meeting and we can’t wait share it with the rest of the team, often quite passionately and maybe a little bit too vociferously.

Now, with about 100 speakers and facilitators to talk to that can get a bit distracting and has recently led to the odd ‘shhh’ being dealt out.  A bit cheeky, I know, but luckily we’re all pretty thick skinned here and take this in the light-hearted spirit (I hope) its intended.

I’m not sure how excited you guys in the rest of the HR world get when the conference is announced but I hope if you have a look through the programme, there are a couple of things that look as interesting as I know they are going to be. And maybe there’s a debate to be had around the appropriateness of shushing a colleague…
