Abbey – Becoming the best bank in the UK
Mandy Garner, MCIPD is a Senior HR Business Partner at Abbey. Mandy started her HR career in the public sector before moving to what was then Abbey National over 10 years ago. Mandy currently supports Abbey’s Risk Division, prior to this she worked in other Abbey business areas including; retail, manufacturing (IT), treasury and wholesale banking, all during periods of significant organisational change.
In November 2004 Abbey became part of the Santander Group, the seventh largest bank in the world by profit. With this came a transformation programme which included the aim of becoming the best bank in the UK. This case study looks at Abbey’s journey so far, the HR implications that have arisen and includes a glimpse of what may lie ahead.
'Next Steps for Housing' - Leading radical change in a local authority
John Conway has been Head of Housing at Kettering Borough Council since 2002. John has worked in social housing for over 25 years and, prior to working at Kettering; he was a senior manager for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
John will describe his personal experience of leading a change management programme for the housing service of Kettering Borough Council. A key component of Kettering’s approach was a focus on appointing people with the right attitudes and potential.
Philip Atkinson – Specialist Consultant on Workplace Change
Philip Atkinson specialises in strategic cultural and behavioural change. Originally an Economist Philip completed his MSc in OD before he lectured as a faculty member at several business schools. For the last twenty years he has been engaged as a consultant supporting companies in strategic development, organisational design, business expansion due diligence, post acquisition integration, quality management and culture change. He regularly presents at conferences and workshop sessions and has written seven books on change management and his articles are regularly published in a number of management journals.
Philip's session is entitled ‘How to Become a Change Master: This concentrates on the specific area of managing change, which is a generic skill for any manager who has responsibilities for special projects or implementing change on a daily basis. The Workshop concentrates on the maximising the synergy between the key actors in the change process. This incorporates managing relationships, expectations, requirements and the attitude of those undergoing change whether the Sponsor, Stakeholder or Targets.
Employment Law Specialist
A specialist employment lawyer from a leading local firm will present a training session on the key considerations, and pitfalls, for business to be aware of when entering a period of restructure and/or redundancy. The session will address both individual and collective redundancy considerations with an update on the latest case law and legislative changes.
