Dyslexia and the Workplace

Mary Noon (BA, PGCE, Dipl SpLD, APC )

Mary began her career in education, teaching history in a secondary school. She moved into special education in 1992, working for Surrey Home and Hospital Tuition and Behaviour Management. Mary then went on to specialise, taking both a Certificate and Diploma in Specific Learning Difficulties. She continued to work in the education field as a specialist teacher, then as a lecturer and tutor for the OCR diploma in SpLD. She has been involved in the government sponsored No to Failure Project run in conjunction with the British Dyslexia Association (BDA). She is currently an associate trainer for the BDA as well as conducting full diagnostic assessments and still maintaining some specialist teaching.

Event details: The evening is aimed to provide an overall awareness of dyslexia, its implications in the workplace and adjustments which can be made to accommodate it.

The outline for the evening will be:
• What is dyslexia?
• How does it manifest itself? Looking at strengths and weaknesses.
• How does it feel to be dyslexic?
• The disability discrimination act.
• Simple adjustments for the workplace.
