Managers warn Dáil of jobless threat and training

  • Dáil Committee will hear that thousands of ‘no hopers’ may never work again

  • Lack of training is key weakness for those losing their jobs

30 September 2008

The country’s main people management Institute will address the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment tomorrow morning [Wednesday, October 1st] at 11am.

It will be the first presentation by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD Ireland) which represents over 6,500 personnel and training professionals and managers in Ireland. It is part of the 130,000-member CIPD, Europe’s largest professional body for people management.

Michael McDonnell, Director of CIPD Ireland, and the chairman, Seán O’Driscoll will outline the difficulties associated with training, securing talented employees, managing performance and paying for pensions at the Oireachtas hearing.

They will warn that many of the 26,000 employees who have lost their jobs since the beginning of the year may never find worthwhile employment if they have not secured training.

They will provide details of the investment in training which lags well behind countries like Germany and France.

Photocall at Dáil (Leinster House) with committee chairman, Willie Penrose TD, at 9.45am.
