CIPD Jersey branch e-newsletter
Summer 2013

Welcome to the Summer edition of our e-newsletter.
We have had some very successful events recently that I do hope you attended and enjoyed. In celebration of the CIPD Centenary Year we had Paul McGee, The SUMO Guy, provide a highly entertaining and inspiring session prior to our Annual Meeting on 6 June. Our Annual Meeting then gave us the opportunity to reflect on what we have achieved over the last year and my full report is available on our website .
On 19 June we once again welcomed our panel of Ministers for the CIPD Ministers Question Time. This was another successful event which led to good, healthy discussion on progress on key priorities from the States of Jersey Strategic Plan. We welcomed a packed audience of almost 100 professionals who represented not just CIPD members, but IOD, CMI, Chamber of Commerce and key members of the local business community. This kind of event demonstrates the ability of the Jersey Group to engage and operate strategically and recognise the importance of contributing to discussions which impact on local business, the workplace and the work force and how that contribution can help influence the implement change.

We are now delighted to be kicking off a new year with a new committee, some of whom have stayed with us and some new members. Our business plan is now available to view on our website.

As always we look forward to welcoming you to our events.

CIPD Jersey Group Awards & Gala Dinner 2013
Thanks to everyone that has supported the awards either by spreading the word or for placing an entry. The interest has been astonishing for our second year and provides a tremendous opportunity for the recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of people management and development.

Entries for the awards are now closed and are with the judges who will agree a shortlist of nominations. Whilst waiting for the nominations to be announced please secure your place by booking your seat/table for the black tie gala dinner being held at the Hotel de France on Saturday 12 October 2013, where the winners will be announced. For further details, please visit the website.
Student Bursary Scheme

As part of our Centenary Year celebrations we were delighted to launch our Student Bursary Scheme at our Annual Meeting in June. This scheme supports the CIPD principles of encouraging people to achieve vocational qualifications within the Human Resources profession. Subject to meeting the criteria the CIPD Jersey Group will fully support a CIPD Foundation qualification to support the growth in local HR knowledge and skills. The successful student will study this course with a local provider of their choice, thus allowing the student to choose a route that suits them, and their membership will also be funded for the year of study. In return the student will be required to provide the Group with updates of their progress and also to assist in promoting the CIPD locally.

Although the closing date has now passed, details can be found on the CIPD Jersey website.

Careers Fair

Once again this year the CIPD Jersey Group took the opportunity to promote CIPD and the HR profession locally by having a stand at the Careers Fair held at the Radisson Hotel on the 10 July. This stand was manned by CIPD members who provided information and support to those looking to enter HR or were possibly looking for a change of career.

Policy update
Over the last few months we have been actively responding to consultation papers on behalf of our members being the 26 week qualifying period and proposed amends to various codes of practice. Click here for our response to the codes of practice paper.

The employment forum has released their recommendations following the consultation process and the minister has backed their recommendations being no change is justified.

The minister for Social Security stated that the qualifying period is unlikely to be a determining factor for employers in deciding weather to take on more staff and that the potential negatives could outweigh the potential positives; however these comments are based on potential consequences and not on the responses, facts or evidence.

This is disappointing from our point of view as we received 79 responses of which 69 calls for an amendment to the current provision.

We are currently working on the consultation paper for Minimum Wage and if anyone has any comments please email or speak to our policy advisor Heidi Gibaut.

Planning to Recruit

New work laws signal an increase in cost restrictions associated with recruiting individuals without 5 years residency, so it’s ever more important for recruiting businesses to make the most of skills and talents available locally.

The Jersey Evening Post and is the perfect partnership to reach an ‘Entitled to Work’ audience - visit our website to find out how.
