Welcome to your branch Winter E-Newsletter

It was fantastic to see so many people at our Conference on 21st October on Employee Engagement. There was a real buzz and enthusiasm with a great line up of national and local expert speakers and an impressive number of stands in the exhibition area from our sponsors, more information on this below. We also took the opportunity whilst so many HR professionals were gathered together to present certificates to students who have recently completed various stages of their professional qualifications.

As we move towards the end of the year it is time for us to say thank you and goodbye to Margaret Ellis who is retiring from work and from her position as Events Co-ordinator. Margaret has been an absolute star, putting in a significant amount of personal time to make sure that our events run smoothly. I am sure that you will all join me in wishing her every happiness in her retirement.

With best wishes for Christmas and the New Year – Auve les miyeu souhaits pour Noué et la Nouvelle Année

Review of Jersey Group Conference 2011

This year's CIPD Jersey Group Conference on Employee Engagement was an outstanding success, as a packed audience of HR and business professionals listened to an exciting line up of key note speakers, who shared the benefit of their extensive experience and inspired and motivated us all to recognise the benefits of engaged employees, and how to create a strong employer brand to help attract and retain employees, contribute towards the risks associated with poor service levels or product quality whilst helping to create a competitive edge to drive your business.

The reoccurring theme throughout the conference was that whilst HR is fundamental, HR strategies alone won’t deliver, and that if employee engagement and the principles that lie behind it were more widely understood and good practice more widely shared, we could all see a step change in workplace performance and employee well-being for the considerable benefit of our businesses and also the island.

Policy Update

As you know when you terminate employment or if they resign any payment which you currently make to them is taxable, for example bonuses’ holiday pay and payments in lieu of notice. However redundancy pay, or any ‘ex-gracia (voluntary) payment’ can be made tax free. On 1 January 2012, this will change, all payments made due to the termination of employment will be subject to tax if in excess of £50,000, this applies to all redundancy payments, whether contractual or statutory, as well as any voluntary payments, i.e. ex-gracia payments.

It should be noted that the current cap on any statutory redundancy payment is £650 per week. Therefore unless you provide a higher than statutory provision for redundancy pay in your employment documents, an employee would have to have worked for over 76 years to have been paid in excess of £50,000!

The proposition brought by Deputy Bob Hill in June 2011, to allow employees to bring anyone they want with them to a disciplinary or grievance hearing was rejected in the states, and the Employment Forum have been asked to consider the proposition and make recommendations to the States of Jersey, we will aim to keep you updated on this in future newsletters.

Employee Fidelity

In September Sharon Peacock from Law At Work talked through the issues around employee fraud. Research into the typical profile of a fraudster is that they are: male; senior manager; aged 36-55 who will commit fraud against his own employer on more than one occasion. She advised us how employers can enhance protection, and she followed through with some very practical suggestions about how to tackle the problem before it has the opportunity to occur.

Bullying Survey

In November representatives from the Jersey Community Relations Trust talked to CIPD and JEND members about their survey into bullying in Jersey and we finished with a powerful case study from Sally Gallichan. Their research shows that the prevalence of bullying is high, and that bullying at work is most likely to be from a work colleague or a work manager. The effect on the individual who was bullied included increased stress, anger, feelings of low self esteem and humiliation. Many participants described how it affected their home and family life. The JCRT have set up a confidential counselling service; details of this and more details on the report can be found on their website.
