Welcome to the Kent Winter E-Newsletter


2011 is almost over and the Kent branch has never been busier. With its new Group Chairs in East and West Kent and Sonia Lassnig in Mid Kent, there promises to be a varied and comprehensive events programme for 2012. We would recommend that if you have been toying with the idea of attending that you come along - events are excellent opportunities for CPD and networking. What’s more, most events are free to members!

In this eNewsletter we have added a plea from a Self Managed Learning Group in Kent. If you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact Kate Killick who has agreed to be the point of contact for all SML queries.

All the committee in Kent would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work in 2011, with special mentions to Brachers, Givaudan and Canterbury Christ Church University for hosting a number of events.

May I also take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

West Kent


I was delighted to take the post of Chair for West Kent earlier this year and my committee and I have already set about organising a number of events. Thank you to everyone who is helping with the event programme and I would urge you to take a look at the website for more details and to come along.

Mid Kent


The Mid Kent Group has enjoyed a busy programme for 2011. Events held include two emplyment law updates, a pensions seminar, health and saftey for employing older workers and the Bribery Act. All events were well attended with some really positive feedback from delegates.

I would like to thank Brachers Solicitors for their generous hospitality in hosting and managing the bookings for the 2011 events. I wish Louise Brenland well in her forthcoming maternbity leave and look forward to working with Richard Thompson whilst Louise is away.

I am already thinking about next years programme, so if members have any ideas or suggestions for topics they would like covered or speakers they could recommend, then please let me know.

I am delighted to receive offers of help from John Murphy , Paula Foster and others in helping to run events for the Mid Kent Group.Rest assured I will be in touch in the new year !

As Chair of the Mid Kent Group, I would like to wish Branch members who have attended any Mid Kent CPD event a very Happy Christmas and New Year. I will see you all in 2012.

East Kent


We have seen well attended, interesting and useful events in 2011 and hope to continue this in 2012. We already have Steve Elliott from ACAS confirmed for an event at the Cummins site in Ramsgate in January. Steve's "game of consequences" is extremely popular so please book now to avoid disappointment!

As the Chair of East Kent I would like to thank everyone who has helped with the events programme this year and a special "thank you" goes to Wendy Tetley. Wendy and I are looking forward to rolling out the new mentoiring scheme in 2012. If you think you can help us please contact me.

I would like to echo the other's sentiments and wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

West Kent / Mid Kent Learning & Development SML group

Would you like to be part of a new group of professional likeminded people in the West Kent area?

I answered YES to all of the above and have been very fortunate to have spoken with a few others (so far) who have also said YES. I have been very fortunate in receiving support from other HR and L and D professionals who have been involved and benefitted hugely from SML groups.

Here in West Kent we are looking to set up a learning group for professionals in learning and development and coaching. If we get a large response we may be able to have a group on each of these aspects.

We are looking to have our first meeting in February 2012 in West Kent and so far we have a range of topics that those interested can offer:

• Barriers to workplace learning
• Training transformation
• Overview of NLP
• Networking skills
• Competency based frameworks

So if you interested in joining us let us know what you would like to gain from and what you can contribute to such a group.
