Sally Masterman - Chairman

My entry into HR, 12 years ago, was more by default than design. I first worked in retail and, as I enjoyed training, recruitment, NVQ training and inductions, I naturally developed in that direction and gained experience in merger restructure at the same time.

Currently I work in manufacturing at a site near Derby. It is a seasonal business which presents the usual issues which have to be dealt with. It is part of a large food group and I have been there for nearly two years. Prior to this I worked as interim at a manufacturing site in Scunthorpe .

Before this I worked on the RAF base at Waddington, which is in the service sector, for a company who were based in the United States. It was an experience working on a base as a private company and not part of the M.O.D. There was a complete set up to do, and recruitment of all staff and TUPE transfers plus security clearance all formed part of the role.

I have also worked for an old fishing based company in Grimsby where I gained experience in training and development , competencies , new pc systems and travelled around the whole of the UK .

A lot of my experience at the current time is around change programmes to help the business improve the bottom line. This has, of course, included redundancies and reorganisation as well as the introduction of new shifts patterns, including annualised hours.

I started life as a hairdresser and even worked in Bermuda for two years as a hairdresser which was an experience I will never forget.
So overall I have gained a wide range of HR experience and some training from a variety of sectors.

When not working I enjoy mentoring for the Prince’s Trust, dog walking and of course nice holidays aboard.

My career has been varied and I recently started a business in careers advice, guidance and coaching, whilst doing freelance training. My background is in careers guidance, coaching, training, marketing and food production. I have worked for various organisations from the SME to the multi-nationals, quangos and education establishments.

I graduated with my first degree in 1997 and an MSc in Human Resource Management in 1998. I have been a qualified Careers Adviser for nearly twelve years and worked for schools, colleges, universities and careers service companies, Connexions and private training and guidance companies.

My interest in careers guidance, mentoring and coaching led me from my Post Graduate Diploma in Careers Education, Information and Guidance in Higher Education into research whilst working as a Careers Adviser. I completed my MPhil research “A coaching approach to careers guidance: Evaluation of an intervention with students in further and higher education”, with Loughborough Business School, Loughborough University. I have been a chartered member of the institute since 2003, but a member since the 1990’s.

When I am not working, I enjoy growing soft fruit, designing and making jewellery and glassware. I keep myself up to date on developments by attending interesting conferences on higher education, careers guidance, coaching and mentoring.

I graduated in 1992 with a degree in music and became a teacher in a high school for a year. I was unqualified and on a fixed term contract which was great as I decided that I enjoyed the kids that were cheeky as opposed to the studious ones which probably isn’t the best basis to be a teacher!

I then joined the Management Trainee scheme with W H Smiths, and spent the next few years working for retailers predominantly in an operational manager type role.

I first got involved with HR in 1996 when I worked for House of Fraser as a Business Support Manager where I had the opportunity to do some staff development sessions and quickly realised that this was where my heart was.

I spent almost 9 years working for T K Maxx in Learning & Development and saw the business grow from just 30 stores to over 200 – a great opportunity for me to cut my teeth in HR!

Today I live in Lincoln and work for the National Offender Management Service and manage a team of Leadership Development specialists who are responsible for senior leader development. Working in the world of prison and probation, a business with well over 50 000 employees, is incredibly interesting as well as challenging and affords me the luxury of helping to move organisational culture which is very rewarding.

My particular areas of interest are in Coaching and Team Development

I joined the Lincolnshire Branch Committee to find out what CIPD in our area was all about. I’m interested in promoting the benefits of CIPD membership and also encouraging members of our profession who are not aware of how to become involved, or why they should get involved, and attend some of the great training sessions and meetings we hold.

I am one of the more recently qualified members of the committee as I graduated from the University of Lincoln in 2009 with a degree in BA Hons Human Resource Management. I spent a year in Industry during my degree at a large local public sector organisation. I am currently Lincoln based and work in the UK Human Resource Department for a global aerospace and turbine technology engineering company. I really enjoy my job as every day is a new challenge and, as a generalist, there’s never a dull moment. I have now been with the company for a year and although I am still on a steep learning curve I feel the opportunities I have had have definitely prepared me well for a career in HR.

Outside of work I enjoy walking my puppy Cocker Spaniel “Simba” and socialising with friends.

Hi, I’m originally from Birmingham and now live in North Lincolnshire with my partner Paul and 2 adorable cats.

During my long career within the Financial Services Sector, I guess I took the traditional route – first dealing with customers in branches, moving into management, then training and development where I really found out what it is I love to do!

Following a successful time designing and implementing a full range of sales, service and management development interventions, I moved to an HR Consultant role as I wanted to broaden my experience. This was a generalist role where I really cut my teeth and learnt an awful lot supporting colleagues and the business to achieve its aims.

Studying and furthering my knowledge has always been important to me and when it came to completing my CIPD studies I had great fun (did I say fun) juggling these together with full time work, running a home, and fitting in some social life. I was then asked to manage the Regional Recruitment Team. As well as success in achieving our targets I designed and delivered a national workshop for managers regarding our new recruitment processes.

As is the case these days, central departments were restructured on a regular basis and during one of these restructures, my partner’s job relocated to Doncaster. Decision made, I would not reapply for my job in the Midlands Region, but did for the North Region. As a result I was promoted to HR Business Partner and made the move to Lincolnshire. Here I took on a more strategic role working with local directors to ensure the Corporate People Strategy married with the wider business objectives and was executed practically at a local level.

Following yet another restructure in June last year my role disappeared and I made the decision to take redundancy. After a planned 6 month break from work and completion of a Professional qualification in Business and Personal Coaching, I am now building my coaching and development business.

I am delighted to have joined the Lincolnshire Branch Committee. I am particularly interested in deepening my own knowledge and understanding of the challenges faced by HR professionals in industries outside of Financial Services. In return I hope that I can add value from my own experiences and am looking forward to supporting students and those new to HR.
