Michael and Suzanne will explore the causes and effects of conflict in the workplace. They will consider the internal processes needed to effectively manage conflict including
developing a workplace mediation culture and also appropriate internal policies and procedures. The pros and cons of both formal and informal methods of dispute
resolution will be considered including the timing and use of internal and external mediators. The informal and formal role of ACAS in negotiation, arbitration, and trying to resolve Employment Tribunal applications will also be considered.

Michael Ord is a well known and experienced employment lawyer and a partner in Watson Burton LLP based in Newcastle upon Tyne. Michael has over 25 years’ experience in handling employment disputes on behalf of employers and employees.
Michael is a registered and practicing mediator, one of a select group of 40 leading mediators chosen by CEDR (the UK’s leading provider of mediation services) forming CEDRs “Direct” panel.

Suzanne Wright has spent all of her working life in the North East, having graduated from Newcastle University. For the last eighteen years she has worked for ACAS North East both as a conciliator and as a senior adviser. Suzanne has an in-depth understanding of both North East organisations and issues, and specialises in consultative structures to improve workplace communication and consultation, and is tutor on the ACAS Certificate of Workplace Mediation course.
