Rebuilding the Rock!

Event details: Northern Rock was the first casualty of the banking crisis and became an international media story in 2007, following the first run on a UK bank in over 100 years! Attempts to find a private sector solution failed and the company was taken into temporary public ownership in early 2008. Under the initial business plan, focussed on repaying its Government loan, the organisation had to be significantly downsized. This included a restructuring of the whole company and the biggest redundancy programme in its history, as the workforce was reduced by around one-third. How does a proud North East business recover from this?

Sharon Benson, Head of HR at Northern Rock, will talk about the many challenges she faced upon her arrival at the Company in January 2009 and how the role she applied for has developed, very rapidly, into something much bigger and more varied than she ever imagined! Sharon will talk about how, in a short period of time, HR has been restructured, rebuilt, refocused and re-branded. She will also share with you how Northern Rock harnesses HR strategy to enable delivery of corporate objectives and how this continuously developing approach is contributing to both the bottom line and, of course, the rebuilding of the Rock.
