CIPD People Management Awards 2011 - Proud to have North East Winners!

The winners of each of the 10 individual categories at the PM 2011 Awards took to the stage at The Brewery in London on 11 October to receive the recognition they deserve. But we are proud to announce that a North East company won the Employee Engagment award...

And the winner is.....

DB Regio Tyne & Wear Ltd

The creation last year of a brand-new company to manage the Tyne and Wear Metro light rail concession, coupled with the challenge of integrating a Tupe workforce of more than 500, prompted DB Regio Tyne & Wear Ltd to develop the “My Metro” engagement programme. A key strategy was to use internal facilitators without a training background to deliver the programme and empower their colleagues to contribute their ideas to the new business, while cross-department collaboration was also encouraged. The initial programme has developed further to include recognition and suggestion schemes and a newsletter, while internal facilitators are flourishing in expanded roles.

The entry, said the judges, displayed an “impressive scale of success” considering the obstacles generated by Tupe; indeed, the organisation had “worked some sort of miracle”. Judges were also impressed by the use of home-grown facilitators: “The huge delivery challenge was met by putting engagement at the heart of everything they did.”

New Resources for Employers to Support People with Cancer at Work

Working with Cancer

Working with Cancer has been established by Macmillan Cancer Support and Durham County Council to ensure that businesses and people affected by cancer receive the right support at the right time.

No business should be without the Cancer Tool Kit...

Phil Hanns is the Principal Officer who recently spoke at our Annual Employment Law Update Event at Northumbria University explained:

"Employers can benefit from two new resources launched by leading cancer charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. The Essential Work and Cancer Toolkit, has been produced to help employers support people with cancer, and their carers, in the workplace, and features an employer’s guide produced in collaboration with the CIPD.

The toolkit gives employers a better understanding of the physical, emotional and financial impact of a cancer diagnosis, practical guidance on how to manage employees with cancer and information on how people with cancer are protected by the Equality Act."

The working with cancer service can be contacted at macmillan@durham.gov.uk

The information and a free toolkit can be obtained from CIPD web guide Working with Cancer or Macmillans website www.macmillan.org.uk/work

Creating North East Branch History

We recently held our first breakfast seminar on a bright sunny morning where we were able to take in the amazing view from the newly developed Newcastle University Business School.

Mmmm..... Pickles for breakfast......

Following breakfast supplied by our kind hosts, Tracy Playle, founder and Director of Pickle Jar Communications, delivered an inspiring presentation on digital and social media, adopting particularly engaging delivery methods such as You Tube clips, visual displays and diagrams and recruitment ads. Tracy used her marketing and communications background to successfully apply principles and concepts to the HR profession, demonstrating that implementing digital and social media is not just about policies and acceptable use but can be a medium for recruitment, branding, internal communications and knowledge sharing.

The seminar was packed full of information and Tracy provided many sources of further research including website addresses, case study examples and book titles. Two crucial points emerged from Tracy’s presentation. Firstly, trust is vital to the successful implementation and use of digital and social media; and secondly, before embracing digital and social media an organisation should first determine where their comfort level is and then take small steps to get to where they want to be.

Breakfast is good for you....

Feedback from the seminar was extremely favourable and we are now considering potential topics and speakers for our next breakfast seminar so please look out for further details in 2012.
