CPD News

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Group

Our CPD sub-group has two main aims: to assist branch members to upgrade, whatever their stage of membership and to promote CPD.

Principal activities of the group include having a CPD stand at branch events displaying a range of information, advice and guidance. The group also runs CPD workshops and provides individual guidance to members through e-mail and telephone discussions.

Thinking of upgrading your membership?
Then attend one of our CPD Events

Periodically your North East branch run CPD Workshops. These events are held to assist members who would like to upgrade their membership to either Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow status.

The events therefore target the following members:

  • CIPD Graduate members with a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience who wish to upgrade to Chartered Member
  • CIPD Chartered Members with a minimum of 10 years relevant work experience who wish to upgrade to Chartered Fellow
  • CIPD Graduate Members with a minimum of 10 years relevant work experience who wish to upgrade to Chartered Fellow

The evening usually consists of a series of personalised, one-to-one appointments, lasting between 20-30 minutes. Advice will range from an overview of the upgrading process, feedback on your draft application and submission documents in addition to any specific queries you may have. Your Branch Committee member will also be able to act as upgrade sponsor and ‘sign off’ completed applications that satisfy the upgrading criteria.

These events will be advertised on the web and through branch newsletters.

  • Development – from use of a formal and recognised tool for self-development aligned to your individual and workplace needs; and

Learning & Development

Our Learning & Development Network provides a forum for Training & HR professionals to:

  • share Best Practice in L&D
  • attend specific L&D events
  • encourage networking and overcome professional isolation
  • exchange Ideas & discuss new developments and initiatives
  • mutually support each other's individual development
  • support non- L&D focused CIPD members
  • benchmarking opportunities
  • promote L&D in the branch and nationally

Susan Cole, Team Leader for the North East Learning & Development group, explains more:-

"In the past the “people profession” was divided into Human Resource Managers and Training & Development Specialists. Whilst they both enjoyed the professional status CIPD membership brought, it was felt by many experienced T&D practitioners that their needs were not being satisfied. A group of like minded northerners decided to take matters into their own hands - The CIPD NE Learning & Development Network was born! The fledgling forum, unique in the UK & Ireland was set up to provide L&D specific events for the L&D fraternity; to share experience, to learn new skills and develop best practise throughout the North East region. Our driving group, who work closely with the NE branch, have put together an innovative programme with the emphasis on participative learning, not passive listening.

These events are very popular, and always oversubscribed. At the end of each event delegates are emailed for feedback, and given further information with printable handouts, which include training resources available in magazines, books or websites. These events are always interactive and have included our own members demonstrating their favourite training methods and tools, in addition to practitioners from other fields involving the audience in bringing their expertise to life. The subjects covered have ranged from emotional intelligence (quite interactive) to group training techniques (very interactive!). As a group we don’t just sit and listen! Participation and experiential learning is very important to us, helping putting the learning into context. All of the subjects featured in our programme have been requested from event feedback.

Needless to say the events are always well attended and we have even had to find a bigger room to meet in!"
