Recent statistics suggest that 11% of British adults believe they have been discriminated against at work due to their age – this is 3% more than those who felt they had been subjected to sex discrimination1.
The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 (“the Regulations”) came into force in October 2006 and effectively mirror other types of discrimination by making it illegal to directly or indirectly discriminate against employees on grounds of their age. Victimisation and
harassment on grounds of age are also outlawed.
Whilst the frantic flurry of age related claims predicted by some may not have yet materialised, there have still been a number of interesting cases hitting the headlines which will be the focus of this update.
