Winter 2012

Welcome to the Northamptonshire branch Winter E-Newsletter

This is our final issue of 2011 and it’s a cracker!

It was my pleasure recently to present Helen Askey with the CIPD Award of Merit, in recognition of her outstanding services to the Branch so please do read the article about her presentation.

The newsletter also has articles by Amanda Buehling and by myself from the CIPD Annual Conference and there is great legal update from Howes Percival on Employment Law Reform.

For those of you who are already booking your diary appointments for 2012 do check out the events page of our branch website for dates of key events.  Amongst other topics coming up in the new year we will be looking at Talent Management in the Real World, and will be hearing about Recruitment at Disney.

I appreciate its been a difficult and challenging year for many of us and so I genuinely wish you all a peaceful Christmas and send you best wishes for the New Year!

Sir Terry Leahy, G4S and KFC - all at ACE!

The CIPD Annual Conference and Exhibition (ACE) took place in Manchester last month.  Helen Chown the Northamptonshire branch chair visited the conference as did our student representative Amanda Beuhling.

Both have written reports about their visit at the conference.  Helen's article tells us about the keynote speaker Sir Terry Leahy and his pragmatic and inspiring session on Leadership, People Management and Growth at Tesco.

Amanda is a Business Support Manager for an international talent mapping and recruitment research company, so was particularly keen to attend the session on Innovation in Recruitment & Direct Sourcing.  She was intrigued to hear about KFC and G4S’s recruiting methods, and how employer brand is key to attracting and retaining the right people.

We hope you enjoy both articles and if you want to find out more about other national CIPD events and conferences please visit the website.

Reducing red tape or recycling rhetoric?

On 23 November 2011, Vince Cable, Business Secretary, announced employment law reforms. However, in practice, he announced that he would be consulting on a number of proposed changes to employment law and the employment tribunal system. This article takes a look at how an employer might dismiss an employee for poor performance in 2012 if all these changes come into place.

Helen Askey receives CIPD Award of Merit
It was with the greatest of pleasure that Helen Chown (Branch Chair) presented Helen Askey with a CIPD Award of Merit at the recent Branch - Mock Employment Tribunal event, to recognise that she is an inspirational and engaging leader who has had a positive impact upon and made a significant contribution to the branch over many years.

After three years working tirelessly as Chair, Helen agreed to remain in post for a fourth year when none of her potential successors was able to take on the role. Helen remains a very active committee member and is always seeking opportunities to improve and modernise branch activities.

Helen also uses her personal and professional credibility to influence her array of business contacts to contribute to local branch events. Thereby the committee delivers lively, cost-effective events with highly motivating and interesting speakers providing relevant and practical advice which appeals to a diverse range of members. Under Helen’s guidance, the programme of events has become increasingly varied, engaging, and interesting, as verified by the continuing positive feedback from members.
