CIPD South East Wales branch e-newsletter
Winter 2012

Hello and welcome to your SE Wales Branch Winter E-Newsletter

It’s been a pretty busy autumn. The 2011/12 programme is now in full swing. Thank you to all those who have attended one or more of our first five events of the season. Feedback and attendance numbers have been positive and of course if you have any comments and suggestions please get in touch.

Morgan Cole LLP started the programme off in September with ‘You're fired! - How to part company without ending up in the Employment Tribunal’. In October, Jonathan Bockelmann-Evans, of From Stress to Success led a participative and ‘hands on’ session dealing with techniques to help manage our own stress, and assess and improve the emotional health of others.

In November, Michael Hoskinson of EuroRSCG-Riley looked at the impact and opportunities arising from the explosion of social media, and in December David Smalley of Daniels Smalley Partnership encouraged us to take a proactive approach to our next career move.

I hope these sessions have been helpful and relevant in these uncertain and challenging times and would thank all contributors and sponsors for their support. Resources from our events are available on our website.

The next branch event, ‘Training in Tight Times’, takes place on the 18 January. Please book online to guarantee your place.

During the autumn we also held our first Professional and Personal Development Workshop which, along with our engagement with HE colleges, reflects our ongoing commitment to our student community and those new to the profession. This event was supported by Alison Love Ltd.

In pursuing our business plan goals, we have also engaged with our sister branch in South West Wales to explore where increased collaboration might be beneficial, and we have accepted an invitation to join an advisory group to the Welsh Government’s Healthy Working Wales Programme. The 2011/12 SE Wales business plan can be found here.

I am looking forward to the coming months being as busy, enjoyable and challenging as this year, and take this opportunity to wish you a peaceful Christmas and to offer my best wishes for 2012.

Upgrade your membership with our support

On 22 February 2012, we host our first Branch Upgrading Workshop since the new criteria and requirements for upgrading to professional membership were launched.

The aims of our workshop are to:

  1. Provide an informal opportunity for those considering applying to upgrade their membership to discuss upgrading with our Membership and CPD Advisers Kath Collis and Gill Parker;
  2. Chat with and learn from others in similar situations; and
  3. Be introduced to the role of the volunteer Membership Assessor and CIPD in the new process.

If you would like to attend our workshop, please first check that you are eligible to upgrade, by visiting the CIPD website
or contacting CIPD HQ directly on +44 (0)20 8612 6208 or by email.

Then check out the membership criteria. This is drawn from the HR Profession Map and there are three sets of criteria (Activity, Knowledge and Behaviour) at each level which applicants must evidence through workplace application.

If you meet the above, book a place for the workshop, plan your application, and we’ll see you on 22 February!

Once you’re ready to upgrade, you’ll need to register on the Membership Assessment tool, pay your upgrading fee, if applicable, and start the upgrade process.

Working together for Wales

Building on the successful ReAct programme, the Welsh Government’s jointly-delivered service Adapt seeks to support displaced public sector workers, helping them to return to work or start their own business through a one-stop-shop service.

Managing mental health and domestic abuse issues

Every year mental ill-health and domestic abuse costs UK business £29 billion in lost economic output. At any given time 1 in 6 people will experience mental ill-health and 1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives.

By taking action on these issues employers can save money, reduce sickness absence, retain skilled staff and ensure staff feel safe and supported in the workplace.

To support employers, the Equality and Human Rights Commission in Wales have developed a set of toolkits to assist organisations in taking action on these issues. The toolkits include low cost, common sense actions that employers can take to manage mental health and domestic abuse in the workplace. You can download the toolkits here.
