CIPD Surrey and North Hampshire branch e-newsletter
Winter 2012

Welcome to your Branch Winter E-Newsletter

The Branch and Group committees have continued to provide a comprehensive programme of events this year. Please see what we have coming up.

I was delighted to see new members attending our recent Talent Management event held at the Farnham Maltings. An article covering the event is included within this e-newsletter.

I would also like to take this opportunity to let you know about our Branch events planned for 2012 which include:

  • Social Networking on 8th February at Brooklands Museum
  • Membership Development in March/April (TBC)
  • Annual meeting and Employment Law event at Denbies Wine Estate – 17th May

Details will be on our Events page as soon as they are finalised.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting our Branch and on behalf of the Surrey & North Hampshire Branch committee we look forward to welcoming you to our future Branch and Group events.

This is the last e-newsletter of 2011 so, on behalf of the Branch committee, I would like to wish you all Happy Holidays and a happy and prosperous 2012.

Joanne Gray
Surrey & North Hampshire Branch Chair

You can now sign up to receive fortnightly updates from your local branch.

Your Branch Events is a fortnightly email containing the latest news and updates. This will act as an event reminder and will provide information on any last minute changes or cancellations.

Your Policy Update is a less frequent email providing the latest policy updates and gives you an opportunity to engage in consultations.

Anyone can subscribe to either or both email updates, from as many Branches as they wish.

Be sure to sign up for this as it’s the only way your branch can contact you via email. Subscribing to Your Branch Updates is free, so sign up today

What's in a name (or job title)?

We live in a rapidly changing business environment where organisation structures quickly evolve, sometimes in response to the competition and often to maximise how new technologies can be used. The HR function needs both to input to these changes and evolve its own structure accordingly.
This gives rise to a much wider range of HR structures and job titles than in the past, but do they actually mean anything or is it the same tasks repackaged? From a career point of view how do you ensure your experience fits these emerging structures and when you present your CV or attend an interview are you embracing the approach required?

On the 11th January there will be an opportunity to find out. Mary Staddon a Director of MSPS HR - a consultancy which specialises in providing advice and guidance on HR organisation - will lead us through current organisation thinking and the jobs that arise from it and she will guide us in the experience needed to be successful in these emerging structures.

Find out more.

On the 27th October Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone DL Pro-Chancellor of the University of Surrey awarded degrees to Graduates of the Diploma in Human Resource Management and Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management, from the accredited programmes run at Farnborough College of Technology. This included the presentation of the Branch CIPD Career Connect Award to Daniela Freudenthaler as the outstanding student on the course.

CIPD Branch committee members Helen Suggitt and Graham Moore attended the ceremony at Guildford Cathedral on behalf of the CIPD.

Your Branch services could not be organised and maintained without the support of local members who have volunteered to serve on the Group and Branch committees. Offers of support are always welcome - as well as being fun, participation on the committee offers the chance for individuals to develop their confidence and skills. That way we all benefit! We are currently looking to recruit Committee members with particular focus on our Walton & Weybridge Group. To find out more, please contact our Branch Administrator.
