For most of its history, the academic discipline of psychology has had little to say on the subject of success. Traditionally, it has been focussed on problems – understanding what can go wrong in people’s lives and how these problems can be overcome.
About ten years ago a number of leading psychologists founded an approach known as ‘Positive Psychology’, which focuses less on problems and more on achievement, fulfilment and wellbeing both in the workplace and in our personal lives.
Positive Psychology uses rigorous scientific methodology to understand why some people are more successful than others and what we can all do to achieve success. It is now a well-established discipline with hundreds of top academics working and publishing scientific papers in the field.
A research study reviewed and analysed more than 1000 of these scientific papers. They were cross-referenced with each other and with around 500 of the best-selling popular psychology, self-help and business books. The study revealed that there are just five key principles of success.
• Take Responsibility. Understand that we, and nobody else, are ultimately responsible for our actions, thoughts and attitudes. How our lives turn out is up to us and no-one else. • Set Goals. Goals provide us with a direction in life. They help us to focus our energy on what is important to us. We need to make decisions about what we want from life and to set clear goals that reflect this. • Be Positive. Having a positive, optimistic outlook makes life more enjoyable for us and for those around us. It also gives us energy and drive, making us far more likely to be successful. • Persevere Intelligently. Getting the most from life requires determination and perseverance. It also requires a flexible and intelligent approach to life. If a course of action doesn’t work, we must be able to find effective alternatives. • Connect with Others. None of us lives in isolation. To be successful we need to have effective relationships with other people in all areas of our professional and personal lives.
Success comes from the understanding and consistent application of these principles. These principles are tried, tested and scientifically proven, and they have produced huge benefits for people who have followed them.
This talk looks at each of the five principles in depth and at some of the key concepts underlying them.
The audience will gain an understanding of how to apply the principles to significantly enhance both their professional and personal lives. They will also be given tools and techniques for using the principles to facilitate the professional and personal development of others.
