Welcome to the Wessex Branch Winter E-Newsletter

I cannot believe that it is December 2011 already, a sure sign that age is creeping up on me! It has been a very busy and successful year for the Wessex branch with around 26 events held across the Branch. Attendance at events has reached an all time high, and special mention should be made to the Bournemouth Poole and District Group where the number of members attending the Group's events has increased significantly over the past year. Thank you to the Bournemouth, Poole and District Group Committee for their great effort to achieve this increased engagement with the members.

If you want to know more about our events look here for the rest of the Wessex Branch events programme for 2012 and if you have not already done so why not sign up here to receive our regular updates to make sure that you do not miss out on the excellent events planned across the branch.

The Branch Committee hope that you all have a very Happy Christmas and we look forward to many more opportunities to welcome you to our events.

Chair, Wessex Branch Committee

An update on Wessex branch activities and what is coming up for 2012.

We have had a very successful start to the 2011-2012 season in the branch with events very well attended and extremely supportive comments from you expressing how delighted you are with the speakers and the topic areas we have included.

The Andover and Salisbury Group held a well attended Employment Law update to start their programme and on 17 January they start 2012 with an event on Improving Team Performance followed on 15 February with a pracical look at HR at the Stannah Stairlift Company. Their event on 13 March is a very interesting seession looking at a comparison between the use of workplace mediation and the employment tribunal process.

Bournemouth Poole and District have seen a magnificent increase in the number of members attending their events, so much so that they had to change the venue for their October Employment Law event. Their 2012 programme starts on 11 January with a look at mediation from an HR perspective and on 8 February you have the opportunity to hear about organisational development and employee engagement. The programme continues on 14 March with a look at the need for new skills in changing times.

The numbers booking for the first two events in the Portsmouth Group were very high although there were some who were unable to attend, a shame really as these events were excellent. Damain Hughes is certainly an inspirational speaker and his take on how to inspire change was a very interesting one.  Those who could not attend mised an exceptional evening! Thi group start 2012 with an opportunity to celebrate Burns night among professional colleagues at the The National Museum of the Royal Navy at the Portsmouth Naval Base. This is exceptional value at £30 which includes the piping in of the haggis, a three course meal with wine and a scottish quiz! Book now to avoid disappointment. This is followed on 21 February by a look at 'tuning into intution' presented by Professor Eugene Sadler.

The Southamton Group also has an exciting and popular programme of events with session on work: life balance and coaching as well as the ever popular employment law update. They start 2012 on 9 February with a chance for you to look at what business leaders are looking for from HR. On 21 March a session examining the way that you can get your message across to senior managers - with impact!

Please book your places on line by following the links and we are looking forward to a very successful 2012. Come along, you will be made very welcome at any event.

We are always delighted to see so many familiar faces at our events and thank you to those of you who book your places.  If, however, circumstances mean that you are unable to attend a meeting after you have booked please try to let us know. Most of the groups provide some refreshments for events and this increases the costs if people are not able to attend.

Remember too, that you can sign up to receive e-mail updates which is a good way of keeping up with what is happening within the Wessex Branch.

Are you interested in Professional Mentoring?

We are looking at the possibility of offering a mentoring scheme to our members in the Wessex region. This would mean matching experienced HR professionals with those starting out in their career or changing their career path in order to provide professional support and guidance.

What do you think of this idea? Would you like to offer mentoring support to a local member looking for professional development? Do you have the time and the skills to do this? Do you think that you need a mentor? Are you looking for professional support?

The committee have spent time discussing this as a way of enhancing your relationship with the CIPD. We would offer training to both potential mentors and those looking for mentoring to enable you to are able get the best from the experience.

If you are interested and want to know more please e-mail and when we have a feel for what demand may be like locally we will organise a training session and work towards putting a successful mentoring scheme in place.
