Councils to get help hiring temporary staff

Local authorities hope to save up to £100 million

National guidance to transform the way councils hire temporary staff has been launched.

Councils currently spend about £2.2 billion annually on temporary staff, and it is hoped the measures will help local authorities to save up to £100 million.

The toolkit, Transforming the Procurement of Temporary, Agency and Interim Staff, was drawn up by the London Borough of Havering and adopted by the Office of Government Commerce for promotion nationally. Written by local government HR, finance and procurement professionals, it sets out the different approaches to attracting and engaging temporary workers.

Rob Sykes, chairman of the Chief Executives Task Force, said: "This is landmark guidance that should inspire local authorities to deliver better professional standards and substantial efficiency gains."
