CIPD and volunteering

There is a long history of volunteering at the CIPD. Volunteers have been crucial to our success, with thousands contributing to the organisation in activities ranging from organising local branch events, to supporting jobseekers to governing the organisation via our Board.

On this page we’ll be updating you on the latest CIPD volunteering opportunities. You will also be able to access our latest research on volunteering which has shown that volunteering experience enhances key skills such as communication, awareness of the local community and confidence, all beneficial whether you are at the start of your career or looking to progress.

Supporting charities

Many small to medium sized charities do not have HR expertise in-house, which can create a challenge when it comes to managing employees. The CIPD endorses two opportunities that help address this:

  • HRNet is the Cranfield Trust’s free employment advice and information service for registered charities. Volunteers are required to respond to online HR queries.
  • Building on Team London’s SkillUP programme, we are developing free training and one to one mentoring support for charity leaders in a select number of pilot areas. If you are interested in finding out more please contact Katherine Garrett.

Supporting schools

CIPD members can have a huge impact on schools in their local area. There is a range of opportunities to get involved, no matter what level you are at in your own career or how much time you have to spare:

  • Inspiring the Future is a free initiative that allows state schools and colleges to access volunteers in their local area. Whatever your professional experience you can sign up to give a one-off careers insight talk, or provide CV or interview advice.
  • The CIPD is working with Team London on a new business Enterprise Adviser programme. Enterprise Advisers will provide strategic advice to school leaders on careers education and engaging with local employers. To find out more contact Katherine Garrett.
  • Volunteering as a governor has huge benefits for individuals, their employers, as well as schools and colleges and their students. Register your interest via Inspiring Governors.
  • Academy Ambassadors - If you are or have been an HR Director for an organisations of more than 60 employees than this opportunity could be for you. Academies are changing education by giving schools greater autonomy. That change needs leadership and academy trust boards across the country want senior professionals to join them as non-executive directors and trustees.
