There are two options for completing this qualification: modular and fast-track.The fast-track programme is particularly suitable for professionals who already have experience in this area and wish to gain the qualification in a shorter space of time.  The information on this page covers the modular option.

The programme will help you develop your ability to evaluate the effectiveness of different HR models and practices, and increase your understanding of the external factors that impact upon HR activities and organisations. Whilst building expertise in your chosen HR specialist subjects, you'll also develop your planning, analytical and problem solving skills.

Content

Developing Professional Practice - Introductory Workshop

This course module s designed to give you a full understanding of the CIPD Intermediate Level Certificate in HR Management programme. It ensures that you are fully prepared for the certificate units and assessment, and are able to make the most of the resources and support available.


It also enables you to develop a sound understanding of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by HR professionals, as described in the CIPD HR Profession Map. It embraces the ‘thinking performer’ perspective, and covers the competencies needed when collaborating and working with others, and when functioning efficiently and effectively in an organisational context. The course module enables you to assess your own strengths, and identify a continuous professional development (CPD) plan based on the capabilities required for ethical, business-focussed and interpersonal professional conduct.


Business Issues and the Context of HR

Human resources (HR) professionals need to understand key developments in the business, and external contexts within which HR operates. 


This course module enables you to identify and review the business and external contextual factors affecting organisations, and to assess the impacts of these factors on the HR function. It also examines HR’s role in strategy formulation and implementation. It is designed to encourage you to adopt a critical perspective of these contexts and to provide workable organisational and HR solutions to address them.


Using Information in HR

As an HR professional, you need to be able to present a viable and realistic case for improvement based on sound work-based research and an understanding of what is considered good practice.

This course module develops your skills of research and enquiry to enable you to identify appropriate data sources that support an investigation into an area of HR practice. You'll learn to apply this data to evaluate the role of HR in business and strategy formulation and implementation, and to prepare and present a business case for improvement.


The Employment Law Practitioner - a complete approach

This course module guides you through the entire employment journey: from recruitment, employment contracts and typical workplace issues that arise during employment, to terminating employment.


Resourcing and Talent Planning

A fundamental part of the HR management role is concerned with the mobilisation of a workforce; taking responsibility for ensuring that the organisation is able to access the skills it needs at the time and in the places that that it needs them to drive sustained organisation performance. This involves attracting, retaining and managing the departure of staff from the organisation. Achieving this requires insight-driven strategic and operational activity. 


The course course introduces you to the strategic approaches that organisations take to position themselves as employers and to plan effectively so they are able to meet their current and anticipated organisational skills needs.  You’ll be introduced to the key operational tools, techniques and practices that organisations use to resource effectively, including recruitment, selection, workforce planning, staff retention, succession planning, retirement and dismissal processes, with an overview of the way different organisations manage these activities and which are the most effective in the context of diverse and distributed locations.

Reward Management

This course module provides an understanding of how the business context drives reward strategies and policies including labour market, industrial and sector trends, regional differences and trends in pay and international comparisons, the financial drivers of the organisation, the balance sheet and the impact of reward costs. 


You’ll acquire knowledge of the perspectives, principles and policies of reward from a theoretical and strategic focus, and how to implement them in practice. You will also be able to assess the contribution of reward to business viability, and advise on the appropriateness of policies and practices to line manages to promote employee performance.

Accreditation

On successful completion of the programme, you’ll be awarded the CIPD Level 5 Intermediate Certificate in HR Management. The qualification is accredited by the CIPD and is equivalent to QCF level 5.

    Subject to you having the appropriate level of experience, successful completion of the CIPD Intermediate Certificate in HR Management means you can apply to become an Associate professional member of the CIPD.

How to gain

To gain the CIPD Intermediate Level Certificate in HR Management, you must:

  • attend the six face-to-face course modules (in the order specified below). When you decide the date you wish to start the programme, you must attend the course module dates that correspond with the start date. That way, you'll go through the programme with the same cohort of people.

  • participate in five online webinars (these are one hour each and take place after the course modules above)
  • successfully complete six assessments (one for each of the course modules above)
  • successfully complete post course module exercises.
Length of programme
This qualification programme is a blend of classroom teaching, online webinars, assessment work and post-course module exercises. You have a maximum of one year to complete the requirements of the programme.

Course Tutors

Mrs Moira French

Moira French is an experienced reward consultant with extensive knowledge of the voluntary and public sectors. Recent assignments have been undertaken for Certitude Support, the Institute of Cancer Research and Westminster Abbey. Between 2005 and 2009 Moira worked as an Acas appointed equal pay independent expert. Between 1997 and 2008 she was Head of Reward at Barnardos, a very large voluntary sector organisation. For eight years before that Moira was senior lecturer in HR at Croydon Business School, teaching on a range of CIPD and management programmes. She has also worked as a personnel manager for the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority and as the senior research officer supporting national negotiators at the Rcn, a trade union and professional organisation for nurses. Moira started her career in business planning with BOC.

Mr Sanjiv Ahluwalia

Sanjiv Ahluwalia is a practising solicitor. Sanjiv has held positions in private practice local government, and the oil industry. He was the Legal Adviser within a trade association for the recruitment industry and subsequently, a training company. Sanjiv is an experienced lecturer, trainer and consultant in employment law and has written widely on legal issues of relevance to HR specialists, line managers and lay people generally. Sanjiv runs his own practice, providing a consultancy service to a wide range of clients. He has acted for employees and employers in cases involving various employment issues.

Mr Derek Eccleston

An experienced and highly practical Consultant, a specialist in Employment Law, with an in-depth knowledge of H.R. and Employee/Industrial Relations, gained from operating in three industries - Financial Services, Engineering and Local Government, followed by 6 years in a Law Firm. Skilled and experienced presenter. Author of a number of Employment Law publications. Personal Tutor on the Institutes Advanced Employment Law Certificate programme and presents Public and In-Company events for the Institute.

Mr David Carey

David is an extremely personable, pragmatic andcommitted business consultant, trainer and facilitator withextensive experience in HRM and HRD. He has held numerous senior training and global HR positions and has had hands on experience in managing large and diverse teams. Alyson is a Chartered MCIPD and has worked as an HR practitioner for the last 20 years with a broad range of businesses from SM to Blue Chip; leading and delivering HR and development programmes to meet business objectives, both as a consultant and manager. She regularly worked with managers and staff at all levels in a wide range of organisations, either in groups or giving 1-1 tailored advice and coaching to directors, managers and staff in the development of high performing teams, personal development and skills gaps, career guidance coaching for role transition and outplacement support. Fees and Dates

Full Up-front Qualification Fee £3,999 + VAT, Member fees: £3,999 + VAT

You can either pay the full fee up-front, or pay on a course module by course module basis.

If you choose to pay course module by course module, you'll be invoiced for for each of the six face to face course modules on an individual basis for the total fee of £4,199+ VAT.

Fees include all tuition, personal tutor support, assessment, course materials and access to the dedicated Virtual Learning Environment. They do not include travel, accommodation or registration as a studying member of the CIPD (mandatory for all candidates who are not already CIPD members).
