Progressing your career and moving on from Associate Member

Hi All,

I am currently working as a HR Administrator. I have roughly 5 years experience working in this role. I have a 2.1 Hons Business degree in which we covered HR for 2 years and I have a CIPD Certificate in HRM.

I am looking for advice on how best to achieve the next level of my membership and the best routes to develop my knowledge of HR.

Are you looking to expand your skills within your current organisation or do you think you need to move to somewhere else?

  • If it were possible I would like to expand these within my current organisation.

If it was me, I would volunteer to take on extra duties.  Alternatively have a look to see what tasks other people do not want to do and would be happy to give to someone else.

You may well know all your firms HR policies but if not, give them all a good read.  I would also suggest going through as many of the CIPD factsheets as possible

    Hi Laura

One option might be to discuss your wish to take on extra responsibility and to progress with your line manager, and suggest that some HRM tasks begin to be delegated to you, at first, straightforward ones and under supervision and perhaps with brief feedback at the end of each one as to how well you coped.

If your managers aren't fully aware of your ambitions AND willing to help develop your skills and experience, then it's unlikely to happen - that's just stating the obvious, in a way, and so is the point about your management's willingness to let you loose on HRM stuff - looking back on past administrators I've had, there are some that I would allow and others that would just run amok and perpetrate disasters and besmirch my own reputation.

But you're probably firmly in the former category!!
