The issue
You have provided a factual and accurate reference for a model employee and they are now leaving for their new job. However, since they handed in their notice they have behaved like a different person – unprofessional, negative and argumentative. Should you alert the new employer to this behaviour?
The responses
Contributors are divided between just ‘letting it go’ and feeling that it would be appropriate, perhaps obligatory, to inform the new employer. One suggestion is that an exit interview could be held earlier than usual which might help to unearth the reasons for the out-of-character behaviour. A further idea here is that an earlier termination date might be appropriate. Those in favour of leaving things as they are point out that at the time it was given the reference was perfectly accurate and given in good faith. Others add that the changed behaviour actually constitutes misconduct which would ordinarily lead to disciplinary action and that it has occurred while the employee is still with the employer.
