Sleeping Beauty
The issue
What to do when a senior colleague is having a regular afternoon nap and it can no longer be regarded just as a “joke”? Does it reflect a medical issue or the need for an adjustment in life-style or is it perhaps simply down to age?
The responses
One contributor suggests that, though raising the subject might prove embarrassing, simply suggesting the retiming of a lunch break or the possibility of working flexible hours might answer the problem. Another member suggests that a handy prince (or princess) might be called upon to wake the sleeping beauty, but foresees that this might constitute harassment. A more serious suggestion is that a confidential and sensitive discussion could highlight the issue, be a means of offering support, but also of pointing out that the practice is unacceptable. It would be discriminatory to assume the matter to be simply age-related and advice from a GP could provide evidence of whether there was a medical issue.
