The new CIPD Certificate in HR Practice (CHRP) provides a firm foundation in all areas of HR. It will help you develop essential HR skills and give you the confidence to be more effective at work and add value to your HR function.
The CHRP replaces the highly regarded CIPD Certificate in Personnel Practice (CPP) and is ideal for HR professionals wishing to acquire a wide range of relevant, practical skills and a professional qualification to further their career within HR.
The Certificate is equivalent to QCF Level 3 and is designed to reflect the new CIPD professional standards and membership criteria. Successful completion will give you the underpinning knowledge to apply for Associate Membership of CIPD (Assoc CIPD). This is a professional grade of membership recognising the skill, knowledge and approach needed to make a significant supporting contribution, and deliver excellent results in the workplace.
Who is the CIPD Certificate in HR Practice (CHRP) for?
The qualification is recommended for those who are:
- new to HR

- working in HR in a support-role and wish to develop their knowledge and skills
- looking to further their HR career with a professional qualification.
How do I gain the CIPD Certificate in HR Practice (CHRP)?
To successfully gain the qualification you need to:
- attend all the workshops that make up the programme (see 'what you will learn')
- successfully complete the post-workshop exercises and activities
- successfully complete assignments and assessed work.
There are no exams for this programme.
Is the CIPD Certificate in HR Practice (CHRP) open to everyone?
If, like many of our learners, you haven’t studied for some time, don’t be put off. You’ll have all the support you need along the way to complete your qualification. Just bear in mind that you'll need access to some organisational HR information to enable you to complete some of the assessment as this programme is about making you a better practitioner, and giving you the tools to become more effective in the every day job you are doing.
Even if you’ve already studied for part of the CHRP elsewhere, you can switch to our programme to complete your studies.
What sort of commitment am I looking at?
Studying for a CIPD qualification takes commitment and hard work. So that’s why the programme is specifically designed to be manageable and flexible.
Most learners spend about seven to eight hours a week studying the learning resources. But because the workbooks are broken up into bite-sized chunks of about an hour each, you can fit them easily into your week – in your lunch hour or on the train home.
You will join your study group and MOL facilitator for a one-day workshop approximately every four weeks. Most learners find this commitment much easier to manage than travelling to and attending evening classes at the same time, week in, week out. Held on a weekday, all workshop dates are available before you start your programme allowing you to plan ahead, making sure any work or personal commitments are covered.
How long does it take?
The CHRP takes just over 9 months to complete. You will progress through the programme with the same study group, however, the programme does offer flexibility if you need to attend a workshop in a different location.
