Dealing with the challenge of engagement

15 September 2015

Midlands Launch 2015 - Group

At the recent launch of the CIPD Ireland Midlands Programme of events for 2015/2016, held on 15th September, David O’Grady, Chairperson CIPD Midlands Committee, welcomed all in attendance and announced the exciting programme of events for 2015/2016. David highlighted the overriding theme throughout the upcoming programme as being HR advancing Workplace Capabilities.

The keynote speaker on the evening was newly appointed CIPD Ireland Director, Mary Connaughton, whose talk focused on Dealing with the challenge of engagement. Mary brought with her a wealth of experience, having most recently headed up HR development at the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC). In this role she engaged with leading companies on strategic HR, organisational development initiatives and services, as well as delivered guidance on talent management, labour market trends and legislative developments. Mary has also held a Director position at Graphite HRM, as well as organisation development roles within the Bank of Ireland and Emerge Consulting.

The presentation itself provided terrific insights into the importance of engaging employees, what engagement looks like and how this can be managed. In addition, Mary took the opportunity to reflect on how the CIPD could engage members to support people and organisations to perform at their best. The talk concluded with a highly interactive Q&A segment where discussions included the merits of ‘engagement conversations’ and the psychology around what actually motivates an employee.
