Essex County Council has an in-house mentoring and coaching service, managed by a dedicated mentoring and coaching co-ordinator within the organisation’s learning and development function. Anyone can access this formal mentoring and coaching service. The learning and development team run a matching process for all staff who wish to be a coach or to be coached.
Internal coaches are predominantly (although not exclusively) volunteers from the line management population. They work by a common code of ethics and performance standards set by learning and development, in an effort to standardise the contract between coach and coachee.
Although internal coaches do not undergo specific coaching training, the learning and development team provide extensive guidance and support for internal coaches, consisting of a successful mix of networking forums, confidential areas on the intranet for discussion, workshops, written materials and support from a dedicated coaching co-ordinator within HR.
