How do I get into HR as a graduate?
Some organisations have graduate training schemes that you can apply for while at university. Others offer entry-level positions in HR where you can learn about the organisation and develop your career. Either way, there are some great opportunities if you're willing to work hard and get involved.
The CIPD qualification is an excellent foundation for a career in HR. Another option is to start a general management training scheme with an organisation. Once you've gained new skills and knowledge of the organisation, you can then move into an HR role. This can be an excellent way to demonstrate you understand the organisation and the value HR can bring to it.
How can I get some work experience in HR?
Some organisations advertise work placements or vacation schemes in HR. Others may be happy to take someone on for a short period of work experience. So it’s worth writing to some organisations you're interested in and seeing if they would have a project you could work on or an opportunity to learn more about HR.
Speak to a local careers adviser as they often know of work experience schemes and could help you with this.
