Reward: summary of the CIPD Research into Practice event

Summarises the presentations of academics and reward practitioners at the CIPD’s Research into Practice (Reward) event in July 2007. The report is split into two sections:

Variable pay schemes - summarises and pulls together six presentations on aspects of variable or contingent pay which covered:

• incentive pay for senior executives
• the approaches to variable pay taken by three sectors - merchant banking, retail banking and engineering
• impact of variable pay schemes on union influence
• variable pay in France
• appraisal-based merit pay.

More general reward issues - summarising presentations on:

• expatriate compensation
• a possible ’job family’ approach to accommodating the differing reward preferences and labour markets of different occupational groups
• financial education and advice as an employee benefit.

There is also a summary of discussions held in breakout sessions on:

• green reward
• flexible benefits.
