Research:

Smart working: the impact of work organisation and job design

Resource summary

This report, prepared for CIPD by Capgemini, offers the hypothesis that a new organisational paradigm is emerging in organisations, based on smart working principles. This new paradigm is driven by the combination of work environment changes (including different structural context, greater use of IT, and more flexible office layouts) and employment proposition changes (including greater autonomy and discretion for employees).

This paper reports on the first phase of a study to test the hypothesis. It includes:
  • A literature review to consolidate the thought leadership that supports the hypothesis
  • Summaries of ‘light touch’ case studies, profiling several organisations that appear to demonstrate the concept in practice
  • Conclusions, key insights and suggestions for the shape and focus for the next stage of the research.

The second phase of the study identifies a range of organisations at varying stages of their journey towards smart working. Our guide includes ‘deep dive’ case studies illustrating their experiences.
