There's a better way to get recognised

As of 1 October 2003, all full members of the Institute (MCIPD, FCIPD and CCIPD) automatically became chartered members. The chartered title identifies members as fully qualified, experienced professionals who are constantly updating their knowledge.

As a chartered member, you will be able to use a title that is recognised by employers, peers, clients and the wider public.

What are we doing to promote the chartered title?

Our vision is that individual chartered membership will become the natural aspiration for all members who are working towards, or have met our Professional Standards. We want to ensure that employers and recruitment consultants understand the benefits of employing a chartered member.

We are raising the profile of chartered status, primarily using advertising and direct mail. We are communicating directly with recruitment consultants and advertising agencies to encourage them to ask for and recruit chartered members. We are also encouraging Graduate members who meet the criteria to upgrade to chartered status.

How do you use the chartered title?

As a chartered member you will be able to describe yourself as either Chartered MCIPD, Chartered FCIPD or Chartered CCIPD as appropriate. For example:

  • J Smith Chartered MCIPD
    or
  • J Smith Chartered FCIPD
    or
  • J Smith Chartered CCIPD

You can also describe yourself as a Chartered Member of the CIPD, Chartered Fellow of the CIPD or Chartered Companion of the CIPD.

Will you get a new membership card showing your chartered title?

We have issued all chartered members with a new membership card. The card shows your new chartered designation and membership number. Please destroy your previous membership card when you receive your new one.

If you haven't received your card, please contact +44 (0)20 8263 3305.

Will you get a new chartered membership certificate?

You can buy a new chartered membership certificate, which costs £30. We will send details of how to order a new certificate when we send your new membership card.

If you upgrade your membership from Chartered MCIPD to Chartered FCIPD, however, we will send you automatically a certificate confirming your new status free of charge.

Will we be policing the use of chartered title?

Yes, it is important that we make sure that only those who are entitled to use the title and designatory letters do so.

How can you maintain your chartered status?

To maintain your chartered status you need to ensure that you:

  • pay your membership fees annually on 1 July
  • remain committed to your own Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

CPD has and will continue to be a key requirement for all levels of membership, as set out in code of professional conduct. All members sign up for this.

We expect to see an increased commitment to CPD now members can use the chartered title on an individual basis.

We require your CPD record and plan is required if you want to upgrade to Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow.

We then sample the CPD activity of members on a regular and random basis. We will continue to review our CPD policy. This includes our approach to members who do not comply with our CPD regulations and in respect of retired members. Our approach to CPD continues to be the subject of on-going development. This is influenced by developments in other professions that we keep in close contact with.

There are a range of tools and support to help you keep an ongoing record of your development. These include a CPD CD-Rom and an online CPD facility where you can record your development record and plan.

Are you currently on a special register and wondered whether you can still become chartered?

All full members who are currently on the Career Bridge Register, Retired Register or Hardship Register automatically become chartered members. But you must still demonstrate your commitment to CPD. We can advise you on what is appropriate CPD based on your current circumstances.

What impact will chartered membership have on your membership fees?

We will not charge you any extra cost. We remain committed to being the best and best value professional Institute.

What happens if you allow your membership to lapse?

You will need to meet our requirements at the time of application for readmission. You won't be able to use the chartered title or describe yourself as a member without being readmitted. In addition to your annual membership subscription, you will have to pay a readmission fee (currently £104 for 2004/05).

Please note, that you may not automatically be entitled to join us at the same grade of membership, particularly if your qualification is over 10 years old.
