It's simple
As of 1 October 2003, just ask for a CIPD chartered member and
you can be confident you're getting a knowledgeable, experienced
people management professional.
Our chartered members:
- have the knowledge and skills required to undertake a
professional personnel or training and development role
- have demonstrated they have managerial level experience,
sustained over a period of time
- are up to date with the latest professional standards and
practices.
Most importantly, they have had their qualifications and
experience independently validated by us. This provides you, and
more importantly your clients, with added confidence and
reassurance.
Asking for a CIPD qualification is a good start
Our qualifications are widely respected by employers and a must
for personnel and development professionals.
So, asking for a CIPD qualification is a good start. But, you
must specify the right qualification for the role you are
recruiting for.
For managerial-level appointments, ask for someone who has
completed our practitioner-level qualification.
For more junior roles, ask for someone who has part-completed
their practitioner-level qualification or perhaps gained a
support-level Certificate qualification. Use the Grades of CIPD membership chart at the bottom of
the page as a useful reference.
But be careful what you're missing
If you only ask for a CIPD-qualification:
- you won't be clear which level of qualification a candidate
has
- you won't have proof that they can put their knowledge into
practice
- you won't know about their experience in the workplace
- you may miss out on candidates who have become members though
routes other than qualification.
The levels of chartered membership
To help you gauge the level of experience our chartered members
have under their belt, we validate experience at two levels -
Chartered Member and Chartered Fellow.
A Chartered Member has a minimum of three years'
management-level experience, two of which will have been in a
specific personnel and development role.
A Chartered Fellow will have at least ten years' managerial
level experience, seven of which will have been in a specific
personnel and development role. For the most senior positions,
Chartered Fellow would be the membership grade of choice.
