Academic Fellow membership

What it means to be a CIPD Academic Fellow

The CIPD Academic Fellow (Academic FCIPD) uses their knowledge and research expertise to provide direction and leadership in academia and research. They provide insight and guidance to facilitate the development and delivery of postgraduate higher education programmes and/or research in the HR discipline.

The Academic Fellow has an established reputation outside the institution or organisation and uses this as a basis for sharing good practice internally.

The Academic Fellow grade indicates that the CIPD member is an academic or research leader renowned nationally and beyond as an expert in at least two HR sub-areas and will be a key contributor to policy or strategic decisions and initiatives.

They will most likely have attained the following sorts of positions:

  • Professor, Reader or any Senior Academic position
  • Director of Research, Professorial Research Fellow or its equivalent in a non-academic research organisation.

''Having joined the CIPD as an Affiliate member I was very keen to apply to Academic membership as it recognises the unique contributions made by academic leaders within the HR practice. I am now a Academic Fellow and enjoying the benefits of being professionally recognised plus my title demonstrates my contribution made in HR to other peers and colleagues. The process was surprisingly easy and I was given great support from the CIPD. I would highly recommend it.''

Neil Anderson, Academic FCIPD, Phd, Professor of HRM and Director of Research (WORC) Work and Organisation Research Centre Brunel Business School
