Upgrading to Chartered Fellow

Chartered Fellow is the highest level of CIPD membership. It recognises your impact on organisation success through HR and people strategy. As a Chartered Fellow you're part of a select group of senior HR and L&D professionals. You're able to deepen your engagement with the CIPD and the profession through:

  • shaping the policy agenda
  • voting on key CIPD matters
  • contributing to key CIPD research
  • using the professional designation and letters Chartered FCIPD after your name.

Chartered Fellow offers you an exciting platform to affect change and engage in the big debates with business and government policy. As a recognised and experienced expert, you are able to share your knowledge and give back through volunteering, mentoring or speaking at CIPD events.

You can see the requirements for Chartered Fellow here (PDF 138 KB).  Take a look at the questions below to see if you might be eligible to upgrade to Chartered Fellow.

Chartered Fellow membership is open to senior professionals working in HR, L&D and other related specialisms. To apply to upgrade to Chartered Fellow, you must be a Chartered Member or an Associate professional member who holds the CIPD Advanced Diploma in HRM or HRD (or PDS or postgraduate equivalent awarded by universities).

You must also check that you can demonstrate your experience against the requirements for Chartered Fellow (PDF 138 KB). You will need sufficient evidence of working at this level in the last three years. Your evidence must show that you have operated consistently and sustainably at Chartered Fellow level over a period of time.

Ready for Chartered Fellow?

  • Your evidence must be current and drawn from the last three years.
  • Do you have evidence of developing, delivering and implementing wide-reaching and long-term HR or L&D strategy?
  • Can you evidence the impact of this strategy through evaluation of business outputs such as business metrics, financial or people measures?
  • Can you demonstrate how you have integrated HR or L&D strategy with the business vision, strategy and objectives?
  • Do you work to timescales of 3 years or longer (for example developing, delivering and evaluating an HR strategy over a period of time)?
  • Are you commercially savvy with evidence of developing compelling HR or L&D business cases at a senior level?

If you’re not able to answer these questions using examples that demonstrate the complexity required at Chartered Fellow level, please consider if you’re ready to submit an application.

"I was very impressed by the whole process - particularly the ease and the speed at which it was completed. I found the assessment itself to be sufficiently challenging that it made me consider how my experience fits the FCIPD criteria, but done in a pleasant and informal way which was not at all intimidating. My assessor was very pleasant and supportive, and gave me some good tips for future career development, networking etc."
Janette Gates, Chartered FCIPD
