Upgrading to Chartered Member

As a Chartered Member of the CIPD you're recognised for your professionalism and commitment to good practice in HR and L&D. The letters Chartered MCIPD after your name reinforce your credibility, demonstrating:

  • up to the minute professional knowledge and experience
  • a commitment to CPD and the CIPD's Code of Professional Conduct.

Your Chartered Member status inspires confidence with employers and clients, and reduces risk for your organisation. Chartered Membership will help to further your career - opening doors to promotion, a higher salary and an increased range of job opportunities.

You can see the requirements for Chartered Member here (PDF 137 KB). Take a look at the questions below to see if you might be eligible to upgrade to Chartered Member.

Ready for Chartered Member?

  • Your evidence must be current and drawn from the last three years.
  • Do you have consistent evidence of managing, developing and implementing HR or L&D projects and programmes?
  • Can you evidence the impact of your HR or L&D work on the business, using metrics, business outputs and feedback?
  • Do you work to timescales of around 12-18 months (for example planning HR business activity over a financial year or managing long projects)?
  • Do you have sustained evidence of aligning HR or L&D work to meet business needs?
  • Can you demonstrate your commercial understanding of your organisation(s) with evidence of developing or working on HR business cases?

If you’re not able to answer these questions using examples that demonstrate the complexity required at Chartered Member level, please consider if you’re ready to submit an application.

You’ll need to ask two individuals who you work with to give examples of your recent work and the impact it’s had on the business, to show how you operate at the level of membership for which you’re applying.
  4. Return all forms with a copy of your current CV to memupgrading@cipd.co.uk.
  5. Our Customer Services team will contact you for payment.
  6. You'll receive the results in six- eight weeks and, if successful, we'll send you your new Chartered Member card and certificate.

You will need to have consistent and sustainable evidence of working in HR/L&D, so please look at the “Ready for Chartered Member?” questions above to see if you might be eligible to upgrade.
