As Deputy General Manager at the Dominion Theatre I look after the building as a whole and everything that happens in it – Box Office, front of house staff and the in house technical team. So as I work in a non HR role, the HR and L&D parts of my job come in peaks and troughs. I lead in HR in the management team. I advise line managers on HR related issues. I work with them in keeping policies up to date. It's my role to look at the legal changes and share them with the rest of the management team. I make sure everyone understands the changes and keep us all legal. I also oversee most of recruitment and keep an eye on processes.

I'm not an HR specialist. So being able to access the CIPD's online resources and receive discounts on CIPD training courses is really important for me and my organisation. Even more so when the theatre changed from being part of a multinational to an independent theatre in 2009. We lost the big HR team that then looked after us. It all came in house and I had to do some learning sharpish. The CIPD were a brilliant help for that. Given the nature of my job, I tend to work quite unsociable hours, so I use the website and the peer to peer forums, where you can ask questions to really experienced HR managers.

As legislation changes e.g. shared parental leave, it's really great to know that I can log on to the CIPD website and get the information I need. There'll be a factsheet. Someone would have done the research for me, interpreting all the epic government documents and putting it all into practice.
