Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR)

The BERR Business Law page provides information on the Companies Act 2006, financial reporting, EU company law and corporate governance.

Companies House


All limited companies in the UK are registered at Companies House. A guide outlining the main responsibilities of directors and secretaries as they relate to Companies House is provided within the Guidance Booklets section.

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

The sub-site on corporate governance under Topics sets out the OECD's work in this area, including its principles of corporate governance. The site also provides further information by country on corporate governance in member and non-member countries.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI)


The information zone for business section contains a series of guidelines on corporate governance, including guidelines on compensation and share-based remuneration.

Charity Commission


The Charity Commission is established by law as the regulator and registrar for all charities in England and Wales. The guidance for charities section contains a range of good practice advice on topics including charity law and practice and the responsibilities of charity trustees.

Charity Trustee Networks (CTN)


Set up to promote the effectiveness of charities by improving their governance through the establishment of trustee networks. Includes a wide range of resources on all aspects of trusteeship.

Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)


The Resources section of the website contains an online archive of articles, factsheets, guides and other resources, some of which relate to non-executive directors, corporate governance and related topics.

The Conference Board

 
An independent global organisation which aims to create and disseminate knowledge about management and the marketplace to help businesses strengthen their performance.

Corporate Directors Forum

 
A US site which aims to promote corporate directorship as a valuable pursuit and to help directors be better directors.

The European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI)

 
Aims to improve corporate governance through fostering independent research and related activities. Provides in full-text corporate governance codes, principles of corporate governance and corporate governance reforms in Europe and worldwide.

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC)


Responsible for promoting high standards of corporate governance. Provides details of the Council's work and publications in this area, particularly the Combined Code and internal control.

Includes quick guides, frequently asked questions and sample documents.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW)


The Technical and Business Topics section of the website contains a wide range of resources on accounting and corporate reporting, audit and assurance, corporate governance, and company law and regulation.

Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA)


The guidance, publications and policy section provides an extensive range of information on corporate governance and administration for all sectors of the economy. Includes terms of reference for audit, nomination and remuneration committees and a guide to the roles of the chairman, chief executive and senior independent [non-executive] director. Includes a section on the Companies Act 2006.

Institute of Directors (IoD)


The corporate governance page contains the latest information and a wide range of resources on the subject. Includes factsheets and action lists on corporate governance, directors, non-executive directors and board of directors.

Institute of Directors (IoD) in Ireland


An independent body affiliated to the Institute of Directors worldwide. The IoD in Ireland provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information, encourages members to improve their standards and performance as directors and represents the views of business leaders to the Government and other associations. The Boardroom Centre, which assists companies with the selection and appointment of suitably qualified non-executive directors, is now based at the IoD Ireland. It offers valuable advice and assistance.

The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) for the UK and Ireland


Contains the latest technical guidance and news on internal auditing. The Knowledge Centre section provides access to a range of guidance on internal auditing.

IOD Centre for Corporate Governance

 
A joint initiative between IOD Ireland and University College, Dublin whose main aim is to promote excellence in corporate governance in Ireland. Provides information on research topics being carried out in this area.

KPMG's Audit Committee Institute (ACI)


Serves as a resource for audit committee members and senior management to ease communication between them. Aims to enhance awareness, commitment, and ability to implement effective audit committee processes. Though based in the US, it does have an international focus, with many useful materials.

National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD)


The NACD is the US principal professional body for directors. It's a non-profit membership organisation dedicated exclusively to serving the corporate governance needs of individual corporate directors and boards.

National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO)


The Trustee and Governance section of the website provides an extensive range of information and guidance on governance and the role and duties of trustees. Includes checklists and case studies.

National Governance Hub for England


The content from this site is now located on the NCVO site.

The non-executive director (NED)


A national service for directors who wish to become non-executive directors or trustees. Key governance reports, guidance on corporate governance and some recent publications are available online.

The Quoted Companies Alliance (QCA)

 
A non-profit association dedicated to fighting for the interests of Smaller Quoted Companies (SQCs). Provides details of its publications, some of which are available online.

Report Leadership


Report Leadership is a multi-stakeholder group, involving a number or organisations including the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and Pricewaterhouse Coopers, whose aim is to develop simple, yet effective ways to improve financial and narrative reporting. Sets out its ideas in a fictitious annual report and provides a number of FAQs and a best practice guide to reporting executive pay.

The Scottish Director Development Centre


Created by the Institute of Directors - Scotland to help the professional development of business leaders at director level in the private, public and not-for profit sectors. The Board Directions area contains toolkits for individuals to assess their current corporate governance practice, descriptions of the roles and responsibilities of key individuals on the board including the non-executive director, full text of key codes and guidance reports from the UK and around the world and extensive links.

The Third Sector Leadership Centre


Set up by the UK Workforce Hub, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) and the Association of Chief Executives in Voluntary Organisations (ACEVO) to support leaders in the third sector and help them develop. Provides information on the latest developments in leadership and access to leadership related articles and press releases. Registration (free) is required.

Trustee Bank

These pages on the NCVO website provide information and contacts for prospective trustees and voluntary organisations seeking trustees. 

The Whitehall Industry Group (WIG)
