CIPD RSS feeds

What is RSS?

RSS is widely believed to stand for 'Really Simple Syndication'. RSS news feeds refer to a syndication process whereby the latest news published on a website can be viewed without visiting that website. Instead, it is either fed directly into your email inbox or made viewable via your browser.

Getting started

Firstly, you’ll need a piece of software called a ‘news reader’. This will check the feeds and let you read articles as and when they are published.

There are many different types of news reader currently available. Just as with different forms of email service like Hotmail or Outlook, some you use through your browser, and others you use through a particular computer. Browser-based news readers allow you to access your RSS feeds using any computer, and downloadable applications store RSS feeds on your computer.

Obtaining a newsreader

With new versions appearing constantly, the choice can appear overwhelming. However, different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with yours. The list below should give you some idea of what’s available and what’s applicable to you:

Using RSS

Most sites offering feeds will use a distinctive orange button, but some may just have a standard web link. Whether it’s a button or link, it will allow you to subscribe to the feed in various ways. This might include dragging the URL of the feed into your news reader or cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader.

Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, will automatically look for feeds for you when you visit a website. If found, an icon will be displayed, which makes subscribing to feeds much easier. For more details on these, please check their websites.

Using CIPD RSS feeds on your site

RSS also allows you to display the latest headlines from other websites on your own website.

We are more than happy for CIPD news feeds to be used as part of your website, but, if you intend to do so, we require the use of proper format and attribution when CIPD news content appears. For attribution the text should read "CIPD News" or "cipd.co.uk/news" as appropriate. The use of any CIPD logo or other CIPD trademark is prohibited.

We reserve the right to prevent the distribution of CIPD news content and the CIPD does not accept any liability for its feeds. Please see the Terms and Conditions for full details.
