The Daily Telegraph reports that official figures showing employment at an all-time high and jobless claims down to a 33-year low are being interpreted by economists as a sign that the economy is at a turning point.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development cautioned that the job figures, while welcome for the Government, were at odds with other indicators suggesting tougher times head.
John Philpott, chief economist, said the statistics painted a far rosier picture of the economy than independent surveys. “These point to weaker hiring intentions and the prospect of substantial job losses,” he said.
