HR professionals must help line managers to get workers engaged in their jobs, according to the lead for the government’s review into employee engagement. David MacLeod said that line managers play the critical role in engaging employees, but HR must “rise to the occasion of being experts” in engagement. “Senior management has to create conditions for engagement,” he added. The review, from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, aims to identify how businesses improve productivity by engaging with their employees. MacLeod emphasised that the report will focus on organisational performance, rather than the happiness of employees. The recommendations for the review are expected to be published in March.
