Organisations are not linking up their efforts on talent management and diversity in a way that would ensure the best business performance, according to new research by the CIPD.

The report, Opening Up Talent for Business Success: Integrating Talent Management and Diversity, suggests that diversity should be embedded in all talent management strategies.

But the research warned that some companies were falling behind in recognising the benefits of developing talent from the widest possible pool of staff.

Dianah Worman, CIPD diversity adviser and co-author of the report, said: “It is alarming to see the wide gulf between the leaders and followers. There’s confusion about how to link talent management with diversity, resulting in the issues being dealt with separately and organisations missing out on the benefits of a joined-up approach.

“Our research provides invaluable learning for organisations that have so far failed to make the connection.”

Based on a series of focus groups comprising over 100 HR directors and diversity and talent professionals, the report cited best-practice examples from Credit Suisse, BT, NHS Tower Hamlets, the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and the Guardian Media Group.

The research report was launched on 8 March to coincide with International Women’s Day.
