Philippa Lamb introduces the three speakers for the CIPD podcast on diversity. We have two MPs, Lynne Featherstone and Julian Smith and our CIPD Advisor on diversity, Dianah Worman.
First we hear Lynne’s definition of equality, then Dianah is asked if there is a business case for fairness at work and later about the causes of unfairness. Both MPs agree that equality must be statutory.
Julian acknowledges the recognition given by the Chancellor in the Budget to small businesses and their difficulties in complying with some diversity legislation. Dianah is a little more sceptical but thinks it is down to communication and ensuring clarity. Lynne agrees and thinks that the new amendments will help.
Philippa points out that the public sector cuts will affect women and wants to know how the Coalition can mitigate the effects of this. Lynne explains the measures that have been taken to protect the lower paid and minority populations employed within the sector.
Philippa asks about several issues in the news at the moment. First: now that 2013 is the new date for implementing flexible working, Dianah is concerned that the postponement will disadvantage UK plc, while Julian is appalled by the low numbers of women at board level. Dianah points out that the CIPD does not support quotas on the issue of equality in the boardroom. Leanne is determined that the situation should change.
The next issue discussed is the Default Retirement Age (DRA) and opinions are divided on our panel.
Then we move to a discussion on gender pay reporting. Lynne has changed her mind on this issue recently. Listen to her explain her stance.
Finally Philippa introduces a round of quick-fire questions. She doesn’t always get a quick-fire answers though. Can you answer with a straight yes or no?
