Philippa Lamb introduces our speakers who will briefly sum up 2010, give their projections for 2011 and then go on to discuss how HR will rise to the challenges of the new year. Jackie Orme, starts with her view that 2010 has been a turning point. Listen to her explain what she means and how HR will be affected in different sectors of the economy. Jackie reiterates her views on the missing behaviour, identified in research for the HR Profession Map and how this missing attribute impacts on the HR effectiveness.

Dr John Philpott, who writes our Labour Market Outlooks and is the CIPD chief economist, sums up a rather better 2010 than he had forecast. He gives a slightly more pessimistic outlook than some economists for the coming year, but see if you can take a crumb of comfort from his thoughts on the economy: perhaps better later, rather than sooner. He paints a different picture for employee relations.

Jackie says that our research on how HR people feel about 2011, reflect three main areas of interest for HR leaders, but none can be taken in isolation. To drive the business forward, they must been tackled together.

Stephen Moir from Cambridgeshire County Council has had to make huge changes due to the government’s public sector cuts. He is very aware of what must be done to maintain trust, productivity and resilience.

From the private sector, Philippa speaks to Alan Walters from Unilever. He discusses the climate for his industry, the big changes that have happened in 2010 and then goes on to outline the difficulties for HR strategy. He is aiming for a positive, growing and vibrant future.
